Satellite Launch Vehicle

SLV Full Form is Satellite Launch Vehicle. It was the first experimental launch vehicle indigenously built by ISRO. It was successfully launched from Sriharikota High Altitude Range popularly known as SHAR in the year 1980. First two developmental flights of SLV were failures. With the successful launch of SLV-3 India became one of the six space faring countries in the world. The satellite on board the PSLV was Rohini Satellite (or) RS-1

SLV was a four stage vehicle which had solid propellant in all four stages. The 22 meter tall SLV had a lift off weight of 17 tonnes. It was capable of launching satellites weighing 40 Kg into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). After the successful launch of SLV-3 in the year 1980, two more launches were made in the years 1981 and 1983.

The success of SLV-3 has shown seeds for the more advanced launchers like ASLV (Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle), PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) and GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle).
