Historical Reasons Behind Somnath Mandir –

The historic reason of these 12 Jyotilinkga are from the Skanda Puraan. This purana is from the Prabhasa Khanda’s chapter. If we talk about the story then Moon was married to Daksha Prajapati’s 27 daughters but he only had affection towards Rohini and used to ignore rest 11. As all other daughters of Daksha were getting neglected by the moon so he angrily caused him that his beauty and shine will turn into ugliness. As the beauty and light of moon was turned into darkness so the lives on earth became tough. Sad chandra, visited the Prabhasa with his lovable wife Rohini to worship the Sparsa Linga. Sparsa Linga is in Somnath mandir and luckily the Chandra was blessed by Lord Shiva that he can regain his radiance anytime he wants. Brahma, one of the trinity, introduced the Brahmashila, and cleared path for the development of the sanctuary. On the appeal of the Chandrama and different divine beings Bhagwan Shankar accepted the name Somchandra (Jyotirlinga) and dwelled there everlastingly. He got to be acclaimed by the name Somnath in the three planets. Since, it was the Prabhas Kshetra where Bhagwan Shri Krishna performed all his Lilas. In this sanctuary there is a little collapse which a light smoulders constantly.

Remaking of Somnath Jyotirlinga –

Records of brilliance and abundance of Somnath by the Arab explorer Al Biruni incited a visit by Mahmud of Ghazini who scoured and devastated the sanctuary in 1025 CE. It was promptly remade by King Bhima of Gujarat and King Bhoja of Malwa. Somnath sanctuary was pulverized again by Alaf Khan, the general of Allauddin Khilji in 1300 CE. It was revamped again by King Mahipala of the Chudasama administration. Somnath place of worship was obliterated once more in 1390, 1490, 1530 lastly in 1701 by Aurangazeb.
