Very Large Scale Integration

VLSI Full Form is Very Large Scale Integration. VLSI is the process in which an integrated circuit is created by joining thousands of powerful transistors into one chip. VLSI started back in the 1970s when complex communication and semiconducting technologies were in the early stage of development. A classic example of a VLSI device is a microprocessor. Integrated Circuits, before VLSI was introduced, could perform a very limited set of functions. An electronic circuit can consist of a ROM, RAM, CPU and other glue logic. VLSI enables IC designers to combine all of these parts into one single chip.

VLSI primarily comprises of front and back end designs in the modern day. While the front end design encompasses digital design with the help of HDL, design verification by simulation and other techniques, design of testability and design from gates, back end design consists of CMOS library design and also its related characterization. It also includes fault simulation and physical design. The world of VLSI is very diverse. Normally, the whole design procedure follows a stepwise approach, where each design step is preceded by simulation before actually being added to the hardware or progressing to the next step. This makes the process error free.

VLSI has many advantages like it is reliable, mobile, and compact, consumes very less power, is easily available, effectively uses space and has the large market background. VLSI has some major disadvantages too. Its cost was very high previously, the Indian market has not advanced in the field, there is a lack of training institutes of VSLI in India, thus production is meager in India and the basic devices using the technology are still cheaper than high-end products which are not pocket-friendly.
