Stock Exchange Sensitive Index

SENSEX Full Form is Stock Exchange Sensitive Index. SENSEX is a free floating stock market index or indicator based upon the market-weight at the time of calculation. This index shows the market-weight of 30 Indian companies which are involved in major business sectors, and which are reputed, well-established, widespread, and economically strong. Based in Mumbai, SENSEX denotes and indicates the business credibility or business health of various companies with regards to the economic system.



This index is also known as S&P BSE SENSEX. The incorporation of SENSEX happened probably in 1978-79. But the first acceptable index was published on 1st January 1986. So this system is indicating the business pulse-rate for 30 years till now. SENSEX indicates the market condition of various business companies. The calculation is based on capitalization method of the market. It does not calculate the outstanding shares of a company.

 

Rather, the calculation is based upon the tradable amount of shares of a company at the time of calculation. This amount is variable from time to time and is thus considered as a free floating market condition. SENSEX touched its first four digit figures on 25th July 1990 and its first five digit figures on 7th February 2006. It crossed the record 30000 points mark on 4th March 2015.
