Bahujan Samaj Party

BSP Full Form is Bahujan Samaj Party. BSP refers to a national political party, representing people belonging to the Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, and the Other Backward Castes in India. The party draws its inspiration from leaders such as Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, B.R. Ambedkar, Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj, and Mahatma Jyotiba Phule. The enigmatic leader, Kanshi Ram, founded the party in the year 1984, who was eventually succeeded by Mayawati in the year 2003.

The elephant is the political symbol of the party. The party is majorly strong in influence in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The BSP tasted its biggest success in the UP assembly elections organized in the year 2007. It emerged as an individual majority party, which placed the supremo Mayawati at the helm of the government for the fourth time. The 2007 elections was an excellent show of the party’s ability to draw votes from the upper castes.

The party faced a steep downfall in the 2012 UP Assembly Elections, where it managed to secure only 80 as against 206 seats secured in the previous election. Nevertheless, the BSP became the first ever government in the State to finish its full five-year term.
