Building Information Modelling
BIM Full Form is Building Information Modelling. BIM refers to a process engaging the production and maintenance of digital representations of physical as well as functional features of places. BIMs appear in form of files (but not always) that can be exchanged, extracted or networked for the purposes of supporting decision-making relating to a building or any other built asset. Present BIM software is utilized by individuals, government agencies, and business who engage in planning, designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining various physical infrastructures such as wastewater, gas, electricity, water, communication utilities, roads, ports, bridges, refuse, tunnels, etc.
The concept of BIM emerged in the 1970s period. The term “building model” was used for the first time in 1985 in a paper authored by Simon Ruffle. The term BIM appeared in a paper co-authored by F.P. Tolman and G.A. van Nederveen in the year 1992. However, these terms do not become popular until 10 years later. In the year 2002, a white paper titled “Building Information Modelling” was released by Autodesk. With this, many other software developers and sellers started using the term. In the year 2003, Jerry Laiserin played a key role in the popularization and standardization of the term.
In the year 2016, the Royal Academy of Engineering of the United Kingdom presented the prestigious Prince Philip Gold Medal to the developer of Reflex and Sonata, Jonathan Ingram for undertaking ground-breaking works on BIM. BIM is claimed to have immense potential in future and can offer improved visualization, reduced costs, improved speed of delivery, increased productivity caused by easy recovery of information, linking to important information such as location of quantities for tendering and estimation, and increase in coordination of construction documents.
