British Darts Organization

BDO Full Form is British Darts Organization. BDO refers to a Darts organization that was established by Olly Croft, OBE in the year 1973. The BDO is one of the founding members of the famous World Darts Federation that was established in the year 1976. It consists of 66 member nations in Britain and conducts several tournaments for amateurs. Post the beginning of the World Championship, television darts became more prominent with several tournaments started appearing on BBC and ITV.

However, by the year 1984 darts started losing its sponsors with the World Championship being the lone survivor on television. Darts became an unattractive professional opportunity. A group of 19 darts players established the World Darts Council (abbreviated as WDC), which later was rechristened into the Professional Darts Corporation (abbreviated as PDC). The WDC desired organization of more tournaments and improvement in the image of the game. The last unified darts championship (World) was the Embassy World Championship of the year 1993. BDO was in stark denial to the legitimacy of the WDC, which it eventually acknowledged.

Many players are known to have defected from the BDO because the PDC offers better prize money. One of the most controversial defections was that of Raymond van Barneveld (a four-time winner of world championship) in the year 2006. In the year 2007, the number one player of BDO, Robert Thornton, announced switch to PDC. The latest switch is that of Stephen Bunting. The main tournaments organized by BDO are the World professional Championship, the BDO World trophy, and the Winmau World Masters. The World professional Championship is the biggest of the three and was part of a unified world championship until the PDC World Championship was conducted in the year 1994.
