Banaras Hindu University

BHU Full Form is Banaras Hindu University. BHU refers to a public central university which is situated in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The university was founded by PanditMadan Mohan Malviya in the year 1916. It is presently among the largest residential universities in the Asian continent, with more than 20k students. The university is a hotspot of students coming from myriad castes, religions, creed, and schools of thoughts and has been listed as an Institute of National Importance. The main campus of BHU is spread over 5.3 km2 and was constructed on the land that KashiNaresh had donated. The south campus of BHU is spread over 11 km2 of land and hosts the Agricultural Science Centre (natively known as KrishiVigyan Kendra). Construction of another campus in the state of Bihar is on the agenda of BHU.

BHU comprises 6 institutes, 14 faculties and in the neighbourhood of 132 departments. The total enrolment at the BHU crosses the mark of 30000 and the student population also includes those coming from over 34 countries. The university makes available 75 hostels for its resident students. Some of its colleges such as IIT-BHU, FMS-BHU, IAS-BHU, IMS-BHU and the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development (abbreviated as IESD-BHU) are listed as best institutes in the country. In the year 2012, the engineering institute of the university was designated as an IIT.

 

The University has established various research centres, which are funded by the likes of the University Grants Commission (abbreviated as UGC), the Improvement of Science & Technology Infrastructure (abbreviated as FIST), Special Assistance Programme (abbreviated as SAP), etc. Some of its research centres are the DBT Centre for Genetic Disorders, Hydrogen Energy Centre, DST Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences, Centre for Rural Integrated Development, and Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (abbreviated as CSSEIP).
