During that period, the department functioned under the aegis of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The relevance of the department (now ministry) was highlight tremendously during the Bhartiya Janata Party (abbreviated as BJP) during the 2014 General Election campaign. The party has—in its manifesto—promised creation of various courses imparting education in the aforementioned fields thereby, promoting the rich Indian culture. The word AYUSH is derived from a Sanskrit term which means Life. In order to effectively put the ministry in operation and carry out the esteemed responsibilities of the same, the Ministry has entered into major collaborations with the Indian Medicine Pharmaceutical Corporation Limited (abbreviated as IMPCL) as well as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (abbreviated as CSIR).

The latter’s collaboration was aimed at preventing bio piracy and bed patents on traditional medicinal science. The development of a digital library is underway that will host books and study materials on traditional knowledge. The Ministry of AYUSH oversees the implementation of the AYUSH Mission (abbreviated as NAM), which was launched in the 12th Plan. The primary objectives of the Mission include fortification of AYUSH services, facilitation of educational services under AYUSH, etc.
