History

The auspicious occasion of the birth of Lord Ganesh a is celebrated as the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi all over the world. People from the Hindu religion celebrate it as a ten days long celebration and the entire environment of the celebrations is filled with enthusiasm and happiness of the festivity. It is majorly celebrated in the state of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. As per the Hindu calendar the day falls in the lunar month by the name Bhadrapada. Lord Ganesh a who is considered to be the son of Goddess Parvati and lord Shiva was during the waxing moon on the fourth day. If the dates as per Gregorian calendar are concerned the day falls between august 20th to September 15th each year. Ganesh Chaturthi history came into light by Ganesh Chaturthi story.

Origin

As per the stores in the Hindu mythology Lord Ganesh a was born in a very unusual manner. It was the time when Lord Shiva was not in kailasha , the place where Shiva and Parvati lived. He has gone for some of his work. It was then that Parvati had to go for a bath and she felt insecure. The necessarily of someone to guard the place conceived a thought in her brain of making a son. She used the sandalwood dough with which she bathed and made a son and put life in it. Later she asked her son to guard the door till she bathed. In the mean time Lord Shiva returned and wanted to meet Parvati. But as per his mother’s instructions Ganesh a did not allow Shiva in. in a fit of rage Shiva with his trident beheaded Ganesh a and he died. Parvati came running and seeing her son in the state turned into Goddess kali and declared that she would ruin the three worlds and finish them off if her son was not brought back to life.

The entire world was scared with her words and they ran to persuade Lord Shiva to bring Ganesh a back to life. Shiva asked his followers to bring the head of a child whose mother might not notice the dead due to negligence. His followers found the head of an elephant and gave it to Shiva. He fixed the head onto his son’s body and brought him back to life. Parvati was over whelmed and named him Ganesh a which meant the lord of all Ganas or followers.

History

The history of Ganesh Chaturthi is well known to all by the Ganesh Chaturthi story. Initially the festival was a personal family affair limited to worshipping. It was in the year 1893 a freedom fighter by the name Lokmanya Tilak reshaped the occasion and made it a community festival on a large scale. He used the day to bridge the difference between the Brahmin community and the non Brahmin community. He said that Ganesh a is the LORD OF EVERY MAN. Therefore people should rejoice and celebrate together on his birthday. Since then all people come together and celebrate the day with joy and pleasure.
