VSNL Full Form is Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited. VSNL is a public sector enterprise for catering to overseas communication services. VSNL is regarded as one of the India’s biggest players in overseas long-distance services. The company is engaged in the operation of undersea cables, landing stations, leased lines, data centres and managed services. It also operates a network of earth stations and submarine cable systems. It also provides international telecommunication-related services such as IP, voice and mobile services. VSNL was established in the year 1986 and in the year 2002, the company was privatised and a controlling stake was acquired by the Tata Group.

VSNL has entered into major telecommunications markets across the globe. It has established subsidiaries abroad to oversee expansion of the coverage of VSNL. VSNL came to the European Union by means of the United Kingdom in the year 2003. It set up a subsidiary called the VSNL Telecommunications UK Ltd. In the year 2005, the same made a major acquisition of the Tyco global Network, which is essentially a highly advanced cable network covering Europe. VSNL also operates in France via its subsidiary called Teleglobe France International S.A.S which operates the SMW-4 submarine cable linking France to Mumbai and Singapore.

The cable has been designed to have system capability of about 1.28 terabits per seconds as well as an initial capacity of about 160 gigabits per second. The company has set up its operating units in other EU nations such as the Netherlands, Germany and Spain. The association of VSNL with EU is precious and strong and this evident from the fact that both parties are actively engaging in the development of an India-Europe cable, which will assure connectivity to the African continent and Persian Gulf. In this collaboration, VSNL is investing a huge amount and anticipates its full operation.
