NCERT Full Form is National Council of Educational Research and Training. It’s an organization that was set up by the Indian Government to provide assistance to school education and academic matters. NCERT was formally started in 1961 and has its headquarters in New Delhi.

It was formed by the collaboration of 7 institutions which include; (1) Central Institute of Education, (2) Central Bureau of Educational and Vocational Guidance, (3) Directorate of Extension Programs for Secondary Education, (4) National Fundamental Education Center, (5) The Central Bureau of Textbook Research (6) National Institute of Basic Education (7) National Institute of Audio-Visual Education.

Some of the prime objectives of the organization include; implementing a framework for national curriculum; vocational education; education to students with special requirements; examination and evaluation of IT education; education of girl child, and more.

An organization was made by the Indian Government in the year 1961 for advising and helping the state as well as the central government on the issues associated with the school education. This organization is referred to as NCERT or National Council of Educational Research and Training. Its head office is present in Delhi.

One must not confuse NCERT with NCIE or National Council for Indian Education. They are different from each other. The NCERT helps in making the elementary education universal. It also lays emphasis on the education of the girl children. It strives for improving the student’s thoughts and teacher education. It believes in providing quality education to children. It has made many efforts in educating people who have special needs.

It has made many policies regarding the education of information technology and vocational education in schools. It has also implemented curriculum framework at the national level. There are numerous bodies that aid NCERT . Some of them are CIET in Delhi, RIE or Regional Institute of Education in Bhopal, Mysore, Ajmer, and Bhubaneswar.

Activities of the NCERT

Following activities are undertaken by the NCERT:

Research

There is an association formed between several independent bodies and NCERT for conducting research on various aspects related to the teacher and school education. The international institutes look forward to these researches in order to do their own project work as well as inter-country research.

Training

The training support is provided by the NCERT for the people wishing to pursue the teaching career. The same is true for those who are already engaged in the teaching profession. There are various levels at which the training is given for regular and in-service teachers. These levels are higher secondary and primary.

The features, related to the techniques of teaching and integration of the contents, are taught to the aspiring or pre-services teachers. The practical training is also provided to them by giving then the trainee position for long time duration. The important state personals are also trained in the RIEs of this organization.

Programs of the NCERT

The following discusses the programs conducted by the NCERT:

Extension Programs

The programs in this category include giving assistance to administrators, scholars who set question papers, teachers, writers of textbooks, and educators of teachers. The departments of extension service also provide assistance to the NCERT for the execution of the extension programs. A large number of workshops, conferences, competitions and seminars are organized by the education body under this category of programs every year.

Exchange Programs

Under this category, the organization has collaborated with a number of global agencies such as NFPA, UNICEF, World Bank and UNDP. The main focus of these programs is on problems related to education. The Indian Government has formed a bilateral program for cultural exchange. The NCERT participates in it regularly. The study material is also exchanged by the NCERT with other nations. Its faculty members are also sent to numerous seminars and conferences to participate in them.

National Talent Search Examination (NTSE)

The NCERT organizes a scholarship program at the national level that helps in recognizing and identifying students that possess the academic talent as well as high intellect. This program is called NTSE or National Talent Search Examination. Every year, more than three hundred thousand students participate in this examination every year. The number of scholarships awarded every year is two thousand. About fifteen hundred of them are non-reserved.

The eligibility requirements for the students who wish to participate in this program are simple. They need to have Indian citizenship, and must be in class tenth. Depending on the states, the first stage’s results are announced between the months of February and April. The same for the second stage is announced between the months of July and September. The students succeeding in the exam obtain the scholarship. The scholarship’s amount is twelve hundred and fifty rupees. In the near future, it will increase to four thousand rupees. The scholarships are not given to those who move out of India to pursue higher studies.

Jawaharlal Nehru Science Exhibition

For popularizing and encouraging the scientific approach among the country’s children, a science exhibition of national level is organized every year by the NCERT. This helps children in showing their talents in the field of science and its practical applications in daily life. There are two phases under which the exhibition is organized. During the 1st phase, every union territory, as well as the states, holds the exhibition. This is referred to as the State Level Science Exhibition.

The entries selected in this phase are displayed in the second phase. Apart showcasing the scientific talents of the participating students with the help of exhibits and models, the exhibition also involves the participation of famous scholars and scientists in it. The teachers and students can listen to them to obtain inspiration. Thus, the exhibition helps in sharing of the views as well as the interaction of the nation’s diverse culture.
