Digital Subscriber Line

DSL Full Form is Digital Subscriber Line. Those technologies which are utilized for transmitting digital data with the help of telephone lines are called the DSL or Digital Subscriber Line. The technology of DSL commonly used to have internet access is ADSL or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. This term is used widely for DSL in the marketing of telecommunications. The wired telephone service can be employed for delivering the DSL service on the same phone lines since the DSL utilizes the bands of high frequency for data. For using this technology and voice services simultaneously, non-DSL outlet blocks are used. Each of these blocks contains a DSL filter, which helps by preventing interferences of high frequency. These are used in customer premises.

In DSL services, the range of bit rate is between two hundred and fifty-six kilobytes per second to more than a hundred megabytes per second in the downstream or the customer’s direction. This bit rate depends on the implementation of the service level, conditions of the line and the DSL technology. In individual trials, this bit rate has reached the value of one gigabyte per second, but generally, it is between five hundred to eight hundred megabytes per second. The data throughput in the upstream or the service provider’s direction in the case of ADSL is low.

The upstream, as well as the downstream data rates in the case of SDSL or Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line, are equal. Numerous technologies of the DSL utilize the layer of ATM or Asynchronous Transfer Mode over the layer of the low-level bitstream. A routed or bridged network may get created during the implementation of the DSL. In the case of bridged configuration, a single subnet is used for connecting a large number of subscriber computers.
